Starting out you'll need to swipe your finger nonstop in order to get money. That said, bit by bit you can go about unlocking pets and new characters, which will help you get money without even having to tap the screen. The higher you level up your friends, the more blocks they'll break (and in less time, too).

With the coins you earn you can do lots of things: level up your main character and pets or upgrade your equipment. All these options are focused on furthering one sole objective: getting more coins.
